How David Bowie Changed The Music World

David Bowie is a British music icon, known the world over for his incredible music and the constant re-invention of himself over the last 40 years.

Bowie broke onto the music scene in the 1960s with global success coming with the re-release in 1972 of the song Space Oddity (originally released in 1969), with a story that was to be in the theme of much of his music - space and aliens!

Space Oddity was the song that the BBC used whilst covering the moon landings in 1969 but the BBC faced a little trepidation from Bowie about using the song as he was a little worried about the lyrics in the song coming true (the song is about Major Tom floating through space, alone, forever), however, the mission (Apollo 11) was successful and the decision to allow it to be used was the correct one.

Alladin Zane & Ziggy Stardust Alter-egos

Bowie often put on a stage show, constantly entertaining fans and curious onlookers throughout his career.  Some of the famous alter-egos he came up with were Aladdin Zane and Ziggy Stardust.  Continuing the space and aliens theme that had developed with Space Oddity and Life on Mars, Bowie developed the character Ziggy Stardust, who was an omnisexual alien rock star, sent to Earth with a message of hope. Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars  (David Bowie's backing band ) were an eye-opener to the world.  The stage shows that were put on and the performances by Bowie and the band were unlike anything people had seen before.?

The creativity of Bowie can be seen more prominently during the ’70s.  Bowie took the band members to the ballet and to the theatre and instructed them to pay attention to the lighting rather than the performances, this would make a difference to the shows as until then, rock concerts had only really used red and green colours there shows.

Even in the ’90s, Bowie was a pioneer in releasing an online-only song in 1996 before wifi and high-speed internet. Even with a good connection, it would take people over 10 minutes to download a song. After the song was released, Bowie released his own ISP - Bowienet.

Bowie and The Spiders both came from modest families in working-class towns and seeing the performances that they could provide inspired many future generations of musicians, sparking musical and artistic creation that can still be seen repeated and copied today.
